Where oh where is the PBA during all this controversy of Interim-Secretary McDonough doing away with haircuts and shoeshines for officers and privatizing the staff canteens, which for all intents and purposes is essentially doing away with the employee's clubs! Should not our so-called union be in the forefront of fighting this crap? When will the PBA act like they are the advocates for correctional officers like we pay them to do instead of having their nose up the a$$ of management and give "lip service"(excuse the pun and support for everything they do?

I think that there are instances where the P.B.A. can and does help individual officers and the dept. as a whole through collective bargaining. I do get disgusted when another union tries to sway officers away from one union into theirs and you have both sides berating each other outside of the institution. I do take exception with the P.B.A. over their absolute backing of Crosby during the raping of D.O.C. According to the P.B.A., Crosby was easy to talk to & listened. Of course, his cronies were easy to talk to also, IF you were one of the boys or a decent ball player. If not, you were just one of the grunts who had to work overtime so that the mighty ball players could represent the institution.

To kinda answer your question Knuck. Right to work state. In a nutshell the word from the Federal Labor people is that the state can basically change the rules every day and if you don't like it oh well. Nothing they can do about it.

The PBA is a waste of $24 a month or whatever it is now. The way I see it, I don't plan on screwing up, therefore I won't need their services. For the money spent monthly padding their fat pockets, I can put it away in a rainy day account and actually have something to show for it one day. All the PBA does is assist those who are F$ck-ups resign quietly and relinquish their standards for their wrong doings without being charged criminally. I'm sure Crosby, AC, and Richie have those high priced "lawyers" working overtime, scrambling for loopholes. It's the least they can do for pressuring folks into signing up and supporting "causes" that the PBA and Uncle Jeb have an interest in. And of course they're gonna lobby for us payraises, that insures they get their money every month.

I don't know of anyone that planed to screw up. But stay here a while and some Inmate will make an untrue statement about you. I hope it's found to be untrue. But you may need that rainy day money to hire a lawyer. I know a Captian that spent $35,000 to keep her job and cert. all because of what just one inmate stated. If she had PBA it would have been free.

Sweetbabycorn, I agree with you. PBA does an outstanding job defending those that shouldn't have a job to begin with. They always have and will probably continue to do so. I can probably think of a long list of people I know that PBA has saved their behinds who should've been fired and charged. That is extremely frustrating. But I don't want to have to front several thousand dollars for an attorney to defend me if I get thrown in to something. These inmates will say anything just to see if they can get your job. I think it is a sad state of affairs when inmates can get away with that as well. We shouldn't have to defend ourselves against an inmate, but we do. Anyway, I don't want to give up anything I have just to prove an inmate wrong.

Has anyone here heard of "legal insurance?" I have a friend that sells it in the parking lot of our institution for, and don't qoute me, less than $10 a month. This stuff is selling like wildfire spreads! What this buys you is legal counsel (a lawyer) in case you need it (and from what I understand it is for any reason other than traffic and divorce.) This isn't one of those ads or anything, I just wanted to point out that legal protection on a monthly pay plan is alot less expensive than PBA (if that's all the are good for!)

The P.B.A. can't pick and chose who they represent. If they are a dues paying member they have to do what they can for them. Good, bad or ugly if they pay the dues they get the benefit. Trust me I am sure they aren't to thrilled in some of the staff they have to go to bat for. The P.B.A. represents Captains and below. So don't worry to much about them helping Crosby. Its pretty inane to even suggest that. As for not planning on screwing up, congratulations. Some how I doubt that makes you immune to the random and unexpected thing called life in the Department of Corrections. Familiar with the expression #$%^ rolls down hill? Plan all you want. Follow the rules to the letter. But believe me if someone wants to shift blame or something happens where blame is needed and you just happened to be around, planning on not screwing up you just might need the P.B.A. I have seen excellent staff members who do their jobs right, being read their rights and sweating it out for months. For something they did not do. Why? Because DOC just didn't believe them, they needed a scapegoat and oh because an inmate said it happened! As for they union lobbying for raises? What are you saying? They shouldn't? Raise or no, if you have authorized the dues, they collect. All unions attempt to get the pay raised for its members. That is one of its main focuses. Its asinine to suggest they only do this for the dues. Can anyone here testify to what the pay was like before the PBA? Can you b corn get us better raises? Do you think the state would willingly give us raises without the lobbying? Have you noticed, that in the last few years our raises were higher then the average state worker? Jeb Bush proposed a 2% raise for everyone but some law enforcement agencies this year . We were not one of them. Should we be happy with that? Not lobby? I am still waiting for all the non union members to stand up and take charge! Demand that you not be grouped in with the P.B.A. When they lobby for raises they are not speaking for you! And when and if we get a pay raise, you refuse it! Your not a member! The PBA sucks! Your principle demands that you refuse the raises so as not to be associated with that corrupt good for nothing union! LOL I won't hold my breath.
