Teamsters won't get us anything in this environment either. Unions only have real power at the local level now in Florida.

The dues for the Teamsters is quite a bit higher also. I heard to have lawyer protection also it would be like 45 dollars or more a month. I am not paying that. I may just seek some legal protection deal from that one group that represents LEO/COs - can't remember the name now.

Yes, the dues may be higher and it goes on percentage of salary. Yes, it may be a terrible time for any type of representation from anyone. But are we not tired of carrying the PBA and being the bottom of the totem pole? The same people in power in the PBA? No accountability to the members. The trend has been the same and I believe it actually has gotten worse over the years. I know change is not always good, just look at the Obama fiasco. But I may be willing to take a gamble. I have sent Teamsters an email with questions about financial records (salaries, expenditures etc.) to insure the Teamsters are accountable to the MEMBERS. I will post their response if and when I get it.

That is way to expensive for maybe need a lawyer. Maybe Rascpo can clarify.

One thing we are insisting on with Teamsters is new leadership in DOC, if you were a Leader in PBA you will need to sit on the sidelines when it comes to Teamsters. We need new blood, new ideals and strong representation.

I thought you may have an answer since you are promoting so hard for the Teamsters. Do not start double talk, you will sound like PBA. I am sure more will request a vote if we get direct answers. Just want the real scoop prior to requesting an election to find out who will represent us in FDC. Should not have to go to a meeting to get answers to simple questions.

fdocteamsters.org/commonly-asked-questionsTo sign up with teamsters its like 2.25 times your hourly salary plus another nearly 8 dollars a month for legal representation. A typical CO/Sgt can look forward to paying around 45 dollars for membership plus legal defense. Good luck with that.

Q) When will Teamster dues come out of my check if I sign a Teamster membership card? A) Teamster dues will not be deducted until AFTER we win our election and the Teamsters are certified as our bargaining representatives. Q) How much are Teamster dues? A) Dues are 2.25 x our hourly rate per month. If you make $14.00 per hour your dues would be $31.50 per month. Teamster dues will not go into effect until after the election. Q) Will we have to strike when we become Teamsters? A) No. Florida law prohibits public employees from striking. Q) How does Teamster representation work? A) The Teamsters are known as the most aggressive union in the country when it comes to representation. DOC employees will elect Teamster Stewards on every shift who will be trained to enforce the contract and represent their coworkers. In addition, full time Teamster Business Agents will fight on behalf of members. The Teamsters also have an aggressive network of Attorneys to help hold employers accountable. Q) If I’m covered by the Teamsters Legal Defense Fund, are there any co-pays, deductibles or caps for civil or criminal representation? A) No. Q Will the Teamsters give our dues money to candidates we don’t support? A) No. It is illegal to use dues money for political purposes. However, the Teamsters do have one of the largest political action committee (PAC) funds in the country which is funded entirely by voluntary member contributions. The Teamsters are also more active on the political front than most unions. The Teamsters are in the process of working with DOC employees to identify a legislative agenda specific to DOC issues. www.fdocteamsters.org

I had been paying dues to PBA for years and had often thought about dropping them because the only time I had seen anything from them is when the contract was about to expire. I kept them until today when they made up my mind for me. Since the Teamsters came into the picture and held a potluck dinner in Raiford, suddenly I get mail from PBA telling me they were holding a Christmas party and holding an association meeting. Since when has PBA held member meetings? Or any function for dues payors? The latest mailings I got from them were negative attack ads against the Teamsters. Didn't PBA hear what voters were saying this past November? People are sick of hearing how sorry the otherside is; tell us what your side is going to do to fix problems. Add to all this, the one time I did seek PBA's assistance I had to gather information on my own and then was advised to watch management closer the next time. I've been paying dues for over a decade to be told do it yourself? So, here's what I decided in all this. 1) Yes, PBA. I am aware of organized crime problems that the Teamsters (and many unions) have had. I'm over 40 and I know all about Hoffa, Kennedy, etc. Besides, you can't tell me Baiardi hasn't ate a Cannoli or two. I mean he's a big, Italian guy, right? 2) Yes, the Teamster dues are a little higher but hey, I've already spent 5k on a do-it-yourself-union. 3) Slightly higher dues multiplied by 1.4 million members in various occupations equals teeth. 4) If the Teamsters can't do the job either I'll drop them too. It's not about more money to me. I want a union that is about making things better for the Officer and maybe in the process a little less cushy on the convict. We're sick of our hands being tied.
