FIND AND REMOVE SPYWARE Spyware is any program that is installed on your computer, without your knowledge, that then gathers information about what you look at as you browse the Internet. Spyware can even capture your every key stroke and moue click and broadcast all of that information to other computers. Spyware gets into your computer by hiding behind other software as you download it. Some spyware files can masquerade as cookies, the text files left by Web sites so you don't always have to enter your user name and password. Once in your system, sypware can Bury itself deep in obscure registry settings, making it difficult for anti- virus programs to detect because it looks like something you chose to install. The good news is there is a program that can locate and remove spyware. It's called Ad-Aware and it's available as a free download at www.lavasoftusa.com. Download and install the software. The process places an Ad-Aware shortcut on your Desktop. Run the program and Ad-Aware will locate any spyware on your computer and give you the option to delete it. I suggest your run Ad-Aware once every week or two. Another safe and easy program is SuperAntiSpyware, you can get that HERERun Superantispyware Please download Superantispyware. After you are done downloading it, please install the program, keeping all the defaults. Please update and run a "Complete System Scan". Remove everything it finds. Another program to search for problems is HijackThis download HJTsetup.exe Save HJTsetup.exe to your desktop. Double click on the HJTsetup.exe icon on your desktop. By default it will install to C:\Program Files\Hijack This. Continue to click Next in the setup dialog boxes until you get to the Select Addition Tasks dialog. Put a check by Create a desktop icon then click Next again. Continue to follow the rest of the prompts from there. At the final dialog box click Finish and it will launch Hijack This. Click on the Do a system scan and save a log file button. It will scan and the log should open in notepad. Hijack This is pretty tricky and you should know what yer looking for when viewing the log. Check and click fix only if yer sure. Please, before any attempts are made to remove spyware, if you are using XP, make a restore point before running any of these programs...

- KNOW YOUR HISTORY & KEEP IT CLEAN...
Both Netscape Communicator and Microsoft Internet Explorer keep track of the Web pages you visit. The information is kept in History. While the History feature of your browser lets you go back to pages you have already visited, it also preserves that information for anyone to see. Here's how to control the number of days the Web pages you visit are kept in History and how to clear or empty the History file.
In Netscape Communicator click on Edit and then on Preferences. You will see a History screen that lets you set the number of days to keep files in the History list. You can also click on the Clear History button here to clear out the History list.
If you still use Netscape 3.0 click on Options and then on General Preferences. You can set the number of days before a link expires. The default is generally 9 days. Click on the Expire Now button to clear the History file.
In Internet Explorer click on View and then on Internet Options. On the General tab you can set the number of days History will preserve Web pages. You can clear the History file by clicking on the Clear History button.
You can change font sizes in both of these Internet browsers. In Netscape Communicator press the Ctl key and while holding it down press the [ key to decrease the font size or the ] key to increase it. In Internet Explorer click on View and then on Fonts. Here you are able to select one of five font settings ranging from largest to smallest. You can also change the font style from that location.
Internet Explorer lets you make the Web page Fullscreen by clicking on the full screen button. The Web page now takes up your entire screen and you no longer have any tool bars. Click again on that button to return your Web page size to normal.
See, that wasn't so hard, was it.

WINDOWS XP SET AND USE THE RESTORE POINT
Windows XP has a feature called Restore point that allows you go back to previous point in time when everything worked. You should set a Restore point before installing new hardware or software, or downloading any software updates. Here's how it's done.
Click on Start and then on Help and Support. Click on Using System Restore to undo changes, and then click on Run the System Restore Wizard. Click on Create a restore point, and then click Next.
In the Restore point description box, type a name to identify this restore point. Use a name that has some connection with whatever you are about to install or download. System Restore automatically adds to this name the date and time that this Restore Point is created. To finish creating this restore point, click on Create.
To view or to return to a restore point, from the Welcome to System Restore screen of the System Restore Wizard select Restore my computer to an earlier time. Then select the date when the restore point was created from the calendar in the Select a Restore Point screen. All of the restore points that were created on the selected date are listed by name in the list box to the right of the calendar.

COMPUTER TUNE UP Over the last 14 months or so I've given a lesson every Sunday here on the show. Today I'll help you combine some of the things you've learned and create a "tune up" for your computer. Here are the steps. Your hard drive is handicapped by the size Windows assigns to the recycle bin. The default setting is 10%. If you have a 13 Gigabyte hard drive, 1,3 Gigabytes of that is reserved for the trash. Not good! Right-click on the Recycle Bin icon on your Desktop, and then click on Properties. On the Global tab you will that the maximum size of your Recycle Bin is set to 10% of your hard drive size. Click on and drag the point to the left and set the Recycle Bin size to 1%. You'll pick up that unused disk space. Now we'll tell Windows how we want to set the memory cache used for keeping track of files and folders. Right-click on My Computer and then click on Properties. Click on the Performance tab. Under Advanced Settings click on File System. Click on the down arrow on the right side of the "Typical use for this computer:" dialog box. The default setting is Desktop Computer. Change this to Network Server and you'll double the amount of RAM allocated to this task. Translation? Faster performance! Make sure that the Read-ahead optimization pointer is set all the way to the right on Full. Click on OK to close. While at the System Properties window, click on the Virtual Memory button. Windows uses part of your hard drive as virtual memory so that it can swap information back and forth between RAM, your computer's memory, and the hard drive. The file Windows uses on the hard drive is called the Swap file. The default setting lets Windows change the size of the Swap file on its own. These changes take up time and use valuable system resources. Click on the "Let me specify my own virtual memory settings" and set both the minimum and maximum size of the Swap file to about 3 times the amount of RAM your computer has. If, for example, your computer has 32MB of RAM, set the Minimum and Maximum size of the Swap file to 100MB. Now click on OK. Windows will warn you that your system may not work if you insist on these changes. It will work just fine. Next let's make some room on our hard drive by eliminating fonts that we don't use. Double-click on My Computer and then on Control Panel. Double-click on Fonts. Right-click on a Font and then click on Properties to see the size of the Font file. Double-click on the font to see that actual font style. Click on the Print button to get a printout of that Font. Delete the Fonts you won't be using by highlighting them, and then clicking on File and Delete. Removing unused fonts frees up more hard disk space. Finally, if you are using Windows 98, right-click on the Desktop and click on Properties. Click on the Effects tab and remove the check mark on the "Animate windows, menus and lists" box. Remove the check mark on the Smooth edges of screen fonts" box. Click on Apply and then on OK. Windows 98 will appear to operate faster because it no longer has to smooth out Fonts or animate windows, menus and lists. In terms of hardware, adding more RAM is the single-most cost effective upgrade for increased performance. 64MB of RAM should be your starting point, and 128MB of RAM will produce an increase in system performance. Take a look at www.crucial.com. It's a great source for RAM. You'll find your exact make and model of computer on their extensive listing. You'll know you are ordering the right RAM. If you are a Windows 98 user, run Defrag by clicking on Start, then on Programs and finally on System Tools. Select Disk Defragmenter. When you run Defrag, Windows moves some of your Windows program files to the fastest part of your hard disk. Again, a free increase in performance. Run Defrag once every week or so. See, that wasn't so hard, now was it?

PERFORMANCE TIPS One way to speed up the loading of Windows on your computer is to tell Windows not to look for any "new" floppy disk drives at startup. This change has no effect on your current A: drive and will not prevent your computer from booting up from the A: drive. Right-click on My Computer. Select Properties and click on Performance. Click File System, and select the Floppy Disk tab. Remove the check mark in the box next to "Search for new floppy drives each time your computer starts." Click OK. To increase the performance of your removable-media drives, e.g. Zip or Jaz drives, follow the same steps but click on the tab marked Removable Disks instead of the Floppy Disk tab. Place a check mark in the box next to "Enable write-behind caching on all removable disk drives." Your computer will now write information to removable disks when is has time, so you aren't waiting while data is being written to that disk. Dial-up Internet connections often run slower than the speed at which your modem should be running. Phone line "noise" can force modems to negotiate lower connection speeds. The number of phone company "switches" between you and your ISP may have an effect on the amount of line noise you encounter. Call your ISP and ask for a connection number with the closest POP (Point Of Presence) to your current location. Reducing the number of phone switches you go through to connect to the Net can reduce line noise and give you a faster connection. To see how many Internet servers you go through to reach a particular destination, click on Start, Programs and on MS-DOS Prompt. At the prompt, type "TRACERT" (without the quotes) and the destination you are interested in. For example, type "TRACERT WWW.JEFFLEVY.COM" (wihtout the quotes) and press Enter. Your computer will now display a list of servers it connects with to take you to that Internet destination. Type "EXIT" (without the quotes) and press Enter to return to Windows. 07/18/99 LESSON 71 Attaching voice messages and sending them with your e-mails really personalizes your messages. In a previous lesson, I showed you how to use the Windows recorder feature to record a message that can be attached to an outgoing e-mail. Here's an easier way. Point your web browser to www.mediaring.com and download Mediaring.talk release 6.5, by clicking on download now / upgrade now. Now click on continue, which is located in the lower right portion of that window. Click on click here to download Mediaring talk now.! Click ok in the file download window. The save as window will display the file mrtalk99-setup.exe and offer to save it to the Sounds folder. Now click on save. The saved file is compressed and self-extracting. To install it, click on start and then on run. Click on browse and work your way to the c:\ drive. Open windows and then sounds. Highlight the file named Mrtalk99-setup.exe, and click on open. Click on ok to start the installation. Once installed, just run the program. Click on the icon just under and to the right of the 0 on the keypad displayed on your screen. Click on record. Select e-mail address as the method you'll use to send a voice message. Fill in the e- mail address and click on the red record button to start recording. When you have finished recording, click on the blue square button to stop. Now click on send. Your e-mail will be delivered. When received, the recipient need only open your e-mail and click on the link to the Mediaring voice Server. The message comes through loud and clear and enhances your e-mail with a very personal touch. Mediaring works best with Microsoft Internet Explorer 4.0 or newer, and Netscape Communicator 4.6 or 4.61. This one is a winner.

WINDOWS XP DRIVER ROLLBACK FEATURE
In computer terms, a driver is the software your computer uses to interface or work with devices like printers, CD-ROM drive, and the like. New drivers are written frequently and then made available for downloading on the Internet. Every once in a while a new driver will cause your computer to exhibit strange behavior.
Versions of Windows 98 and ME really didn't really have a fix for this dilmema. Windows XP comes to the rescue with its Driver Roll Back option. Here's how it's done.
Click on Start and then double-click on Control Panel. Double- click on System to open the System Properties window. I use a shortcut here by holding down the Windows key on the lower left side of the keyboard and then tapping the Pause Break key on the upper right side of the keyboard to bring up the System Properties window. Now click on the Hardwae tap and then on the Devic Driver button.
Double-click on the catagory of the device for which you installed a new driver. Now right-click on the device and click on Properties. Click on the Drive tab and then click on the Roll Back Driver button. Windows XP will then roll back to the last driver assigned to that particular device.

TURN A PICTURE INTO YOUR COMPUTER WALLPAPER
You can use any photograph as your computer wallpaper or Windows background. It's easy. If you have a digital camera, load your favorite photo into your computer and open it in your photo-editing software. If you didn't get any, you can open it with the Paint program that comes with Windows (Start, Programs, Accessories, Paint).
Choose "Save As" and save the photo to your hard drive. Be sure to make a note of where you save the file. Close the photo- editing software program. Click on Start, then on settings, and then open Control Panel. Double-click on the Display icon and then click on the Background tab.
Click the Browse button to gain access to a list of files and directories. Navigate to your new photograph and double-click on the file name. Now you should see your photo in the image of a screen on the dialog box. Click the Apply button and then click OK. That's it. Your favorite photo is now your Desktop wallpaper.
