A Lake City correctional officer is dead after being stabbed in the neck by an inmate with a "homemade weapon" at the Columbia Correctional Institution Annex, according to Ann Howard, director of public affairs for the Florida Department of Corrections. The slain officer was identified as Sgt. Ruben Thomas, 24, a six-year-veteran of the Department of Corrections. The suspect is 37-year-old inmate Richard Franklin, Howard said. Franklin was sentenced to life in prison for a first-degree murder conviction in 1995, according to prison records. He also had a 1994 conviction of battery on a law enforcement officer. Word is that another officer was also involved and hurt badly. My thoughts and prayers go out to everyone involved in this tragedy.

Our thoughts and prayers are with Sergeant Thomas' family. So many do not realize the constant danger we are exposed to as we walked the beat behind the wall.
Has anyone heard how the other officer Brewer is doing?

This was unbelivably horrible and my prayers go out to Sgt. Thomas' family especially the children who will grow up without a father. Any word yet on a statewide fundraiser for his family?
