After discovering this board and trying to catch up on all the threads I have noticed a number of references to PBA and was suprised there was no exclusive thread. So even though I have no horse in this race, here goes:
I joined PBA as a new cock years ago because membership was free while you were on probation. (don't know if it is still that way) When I made probation, I did not become a dues paying member because I was not making much and with a new baby in the oven, the $ were just not there. As time rolled on and I moved around and up, I found myself where being a member of PBA was wise because of the legal assist if I goofed or was alleged to have goofed. I am no longer in a risky position so have again dropped the coverage. Over the years it was my observation that the PBA really has not done much obvious politicing to fund the STEP Plan (remember it, it got funded the year it was created and that was it) or cause the DC to find us better and cheaper health coverage. Do you know that a retiree with a family will need to give up $800 - $900 a month for coverage currently. Most recent, can anyone tell me of any instance where the PBA took the DC to task for allowing Warden's to overlook years of service, job performance and reliability to put new cocks in choice positions/shift/days off. (BTW, I'm not whinning, I have had M-F 8-5 since 1988) If PBA has, I saw no evidence of it in the Iron Triangle and more recently Region I. I submit that the problem is PBA has lost it's focus to represent the dues paying members and instead has been making it's priority to build a warm and loving relationship with the Secretary. For the PBA and DC to be such good buddies, there has got to be some deal making and I would love to know who or what is being sacrificed by PBA to achieve that goal. Granted, in the past the PBA has done an outstanding job of representing officers who have or have not done right or wrong. With turn over, low pay, outragous insurance premiums and co-pays, a lousey 5% for promotions, I think it is time for the dues payers to demand PBA start aggrssively working on the legislature and be a little less concerned about schmoozing the Secretary. What say you?

Could not agree more. I was a dues paying member of PBA for over 13 years. When I needed them they were not there for me. It is my opinion that PBA is there only for the PBA leadership. Why has PBA not demanded proper equipment for officers? Why has PBA not demanded following seniority for schedules? Why has PBA not demanded the end of the corruption with in the D.O.C.? Why, because they have want they want, which is your dues.

I have seen too many officers laying out and when they are finally disciplined P.B.A. does not hesitate to represent them and fight for their jobs. I have not seen P.B.A. fight for me to get paid for the annual leave that I have to convert to sick leave because I had to work for the officers that did not show up as scheduled. Where's the justice?

Well then I say it is time to put it to a vote do we keep pba or kick their tails down the road with crosby. Our dues keep going up so they can keep giving less service. If they were really for the officers who have paid their dues faithfully as they claim to be then they would be fighting for a real raise and not just taking what we can get without them.

I think that each institution should vote on the issue of sports Each shift should vote on a secret ballot if they want their institution to continue to compete in sport activities, Everybody is affected by sports in one way or another. As for my self, I’ve seem the down fall Of moral at the institution since all of these sports has gotten out of hand. Until it is stopped, we will continue to have people hired just to play games. Sports players will be given special treatment, The answers to question going to be asked at interviews for promotion. I heard a Warden make the statement about an officer ( He’s not worth a damn as an officer but he can hit a ball). This dude was brought in and given a statehouse, day shift, weekends off, and a work sqd. Other officers had to do his work for him because he never did his job. Until sport competition between institutions is done away with, We will have this problem. Ask yourself the question, would we have the problems that we’re facing now if there were no sports program sponsored by the institution. First, It was softball, then football, and volleyball. Horseshoes, golf games and bowling. Now it’s sex games, (who can screw his fellow officer by not carrying his share of the load.) If you have worked with the Department over seven years, You know sports is a down fall.

well obviously someone should not receive preferential treatment just because of softball. I never was in favor of that. I do however feel that softball shouldn't be abolished simply because some whiners who are jealous want it dead.
Canopener I’m not a whiner but I have seen so many people treated unfairly. Can you suggest a way that we can sponsor ball teams and all people be treated fairly? Promoted by the work that they do. The shift they want by the amount of time that they have worked at an Institution, there days of by the quality of work that they do. I’ve seen officers living in state housing have to move out for people who play sports. people on the list for state housing be over looked because of what was promise to people to move here and play. Like the old saying (you can’t have your cake and eat it to). At some point in time it got to come to a head. If there was a way to poll the people on this board to see if they think that sports program should be stopped. Or, competition between institutions be stopped. It would be interesting to know how many people is for or against it. If there wasn’t sports programs designed to have competition between institutions. D.O.C. wouldn’t be having the problems that it has now.

I think that be it good or bad P.B.A. is all we have. For the most part thay do the right thing. How many times have we seen our fellow officers say "I'll just hire and attorney if I have any problem. That is hard to do when you don't have a job. If thay do something we don't think is right then we all need to get involved (most of us have there 800#).

PBA does do a great job. Can you say James Crosby. PBA strongly endorsed and backed him during the investigation. Tisk, tisk!

I am a PBA member for over 15 years and will say how I feel. I keep them and pay their exorbitant fees just to keep a lawyer around for an emergency. That's really all they are good for. Helping the f*ckups and the whiners that we don't need to get their job back.
Most of the higher ups are bottom feeders, taking the scraps the state wants to toss them, and bragging about it.
What happened to the "Step Plan" they pushed for several years ago?
Shift differential pay?
What about Medical retirement benefits?
Oh, wait a minute, they did get the license plate bill passed. WOW! That helps!
PBA is endorsing Charlie Crist. If you remember, Crist originally did not endorse correctional officers but jumped on the bandwagon to get our votes, but can we trust him? PBA endorsed Jimmy too!
By the way, just what is PBA pushing for this year, anyone know?
