Sgt.Joe Whitehead has departed us the 7 Th Nov. 2011 . In the past he honorably served his country and fought in Viet Nam for the U.S.Army . Earlier in his life he was an Illinois State Corrections Officer . Later in his life he worked / served the Florida Department of Corrections . The institutions are as follows : Holmes C.I. and Washington C.I. / North Florida Reception Center . He retired a sergeant last year Feb. 2010 , but was asked several times to be a lieutenant by people in power . He turned them down because he liked being an unhindered man ( he was never a brown noser or a snitch and if he thought you were full of it he didn't want to have to mince his words and skate around it to be politically correct or deal with union complaints / issues ) . He always wanted to be part of the crew and not boxed in . He was a man's man = just a good old boy . Although several times he was acting supervisor running shift at Washington C.I. in the past when the state would have sergeant's doing that to save money . He encouraged many in corrections and saved several also = inmates and especially staff . His son Scott Whitehead has followed him and presently serves the department . Please think fondly of Sgt. Joe Whitehead = Say a prayer for him and his family . He is admired for his service / survival to the department and the State of Florida , loved and missed . Respectfully ; SGT.JOE WHITEHEAD = Rest in Peace .
