Teamsters Local 429 Members Applaud Arbitration Award Correctional Officers and members of Local 249 in Pittsburgh will receive a retroactive 2.5 percent pay increase to January 2011, among other increases, thanks to an award issued by an arbitrator. The correctional officers are employees of Schuykill County Prison in Pennsylvania. Issued on July 25, the award resolves outstanding contract issues between Local 249 and Schuykill County Prison. Aside from the retroactive pay increase, correctional officers will also receive three percent increases each January through 2014. In addition to the across-the-board salary improvements for county prison employees, the new contract provides for monetary longevity bonuses of $500 after three years of service. It also provides for a one percent increase after the fourth year of service and a two percent increase to base pay after ten years on the job. Correctional officers will also receive 2.5 times their hourly rate for holiday overtime pay. The four-year agreement includes additional personal days, more time for funeral leave, and a strict procedure on approving vacation requests. “The union’s team was well prepared to make the case for significant gains even during very difficult economic times,” said Bill Shappell, President of Teamsters Local 429. “The chief economist from our International office in Washington, D.C. played an important role in persuading the arbitrator about the need for a package that included fair wage increases. I am very pleased that the Teamsters have made a positive contribution in the lives of our correctional officers.”

This is a county jail in another state. Were talking about a much larger state system that we are in. This is apples and oranges.

Maybe so Highlander, so you just keep on with PBA and hope they do something different than they been have. Insanity= doing the same thing over and over expecting different results. Think I'll try something different, so I know I'll get a different result. If they don't work out I'll kick them to the curb too. Somehow, I don't think it will come to that though.

Everyone keeps pushing change. Well, change is exactly what got us Obama and Scott and got us in this mess. So keep your change.

Everyone keeps pushing change. Well, change is exactly what got us Obama and Scott and got us in this mess. So keep your change. And you think that Obama loving liberal Sink was going to do so much? She would have just taxed and spent her way through the Keynsean model. I love going to the tag office and paying all of those gloriouos new fees for everything from tags to DL renewals. Thanks Charlie. You wonder why you did not get the Senate seat. I pulled a case history on my child support. During Sink's tenure what should have been bi-weekly payments were paid monthly. Now why is that? You see the money came out bi-weekly. Previously it was paid to the courthouse bi-weekly. So the payments should have been received that way at the courthouse. But, nope. It was held so the State of Florida could accrue interest on the monies, just like uniform allowance checks get held. It does not matter now that it is all paid up. I just found it interesting when i was reading over the history. But, what do I know? I have all of this negative karma so it can't be much.

If teamsters is so awesome, why couldn't they save the officers in Washington state from a 3% pay cut?

If teamsters is so awesome, why couldn't they save the officers in Washington state from a 3% pay cut? Just like any other budget proposed by government. IMHO the problem with the PBA is the same old regime in place. The by-laws that keep the members from holding numerous offices. From my review of the Teamsters the local appears to run their officers by the members votes. JB and his cronies have been in place for way too long.

Oh, and that's what a contract should look like. Not that anemic, sickly thing staff just voted in as a contract.

Yes but at least with PBA you have a choice to be a member or not. Nobody is taking money out of my check for dues, shop fees or charities unless I say so. Especially considering after that you got to add another 8 to 9 dollars for legal which does, have limits. Nobody can protect you from retaliation, so why would anyone want to pay more?

Comparing this to us is like comparing Apples to Oranges,, We are a right to work state. Washington is not. In Washington the teamsters are a "Union" in Florida they are a "Collective Bargaining Agent" Being required to be a member has nothing to do with PBA vs Teamsters. One of the basic meaning of "Right to Work" is we are not required to be a member of a union as a condition of employment. So basically, you can't look at that contract and compare it to anything the PBA or Teamsters can/will do for us.
