To: All SCO Chapter Members From: Jimmy Baiardi, President Date: February 18, 2010 Re: Shift and Work Hours Information The Florida PBA has received information about officers, especially lieutenants and captains, being required to work twelve-hour shifts and extra hours. We need your help to verify this information so we can present it to DC management at a consultation. Please answer the following questions if they are applicable to you: For correctional officers and sergeants: In the past six months, has your institution required you to work twelve-hour (12) shifts? If so, what dates? For correctional lieutenants and captains: In the past six months, has your institution required you to work twelve-hour (12) shifts? If so, what dates? For correctional lieutenants and captains: In the past six months how often are you required to work in a correctional officer/sergeant position due to the absence of an officer/sergeant? How many hours have you been required to fill in for a correctional officer/sergeant? If you recall, what dates? For correctional lieutenants and captains: How many regular compensatory time hours have you accumulated? If you have accumulated more than 240 hours, how many hours have you worked beyond the 240 hour limit in the past six months? Thanks for the information and please pass the e-mail on to your friends so we can get a larger response to these questions. Please e-mail your responses to me at scopba12@aol.com. Thanks. This is common practice at Zephyrhills C.I. The Lt's and Captains were on a 12 hour rotation for a few months back in the summer and fall of 2009. I know I heard some say they could not use their comp time fast enough and they lost a bunch.

What the heck is PBA going to do? How many Lt's and Capt's belong to PBA? How many does that affect. It has been that forever for the "white shirts". Now that is what the PBA needs to spend time on, Middle Management!!!!!!! The "white shirts" should not be in the same contract, since they usually start the disciplinary action. Come on JB get a real job!!!!! PBA you are just a bunch of blood sucking losers.

Yep, you're probably right. Poor thing was probably told he had to work overtime, now he wants to make an issue of it.

So far this has not yet happened to anyone where I work since I have been there. But 8 hour turn arounds are very common for one Lt and he has only about 4 hours available for sleeping because of the commute distance. Lets see Saturday 4pm-12am Sunday 8am-4pm and Monday 12am-8am. The poor guy was whipped by Monday when he got home at 9:30am..... I see this as a bigger problem than 12 hour shifts......

thats what i mean they don't give a damn about sgt s or officers that have to do doubles on every shift.as long as they can flex you it doesn't bother them.no one even knows until there is no room for flexing and the state has to pay. now that its affecting some white shirts now something has to be done. i find it especially ironic this is coming from capt. b since everyone he works with has to work around his schedule i hope everyone that has worked extra for him puts their name on that list.and i am damn tired seeing people working doubles cause someone is busy partying and points the finger at everyone else and says i don't have an attendance problem.

Where I work we do have an attendance problem. I also suspect what has been said about party's and calling in is 100% true as well. Lets hope something is done for all levels from CO all the way to captain......

Where I am at, 12 hour shifts allow us to have more time off. I don't mind working 12's when I can get a week off each month for it. PBA...do not ruin a good thing. Some of us like what we have.
I can understand the aggravation if an OIC is out on an extended illness. The administration should be appointing "acting" Lieutenants and Captains to make up for long term absences.

There's no reason someone would/needs to work 3 different shifts in a work week. JUST MORE PISS POOR MANAGEMENT!!!!!!!! Just one more reason not to go for the BIG BUCKS!!! It is not worth your health.

I hope it changes for Lt's and Captains because they payoff for promoting to those spots shouldnt be the possibility of maybe making it to major! Since we don't give out larger wages for promotions maybe compensating someone for the hours they work is a good idea! At Charlotte you would maybe have more home grown Lt's and Captains if they were compensated for the time other then comp time that tops out.

I'll gladly take the place of any LT that has an issue with working 12hr shifts, or even 3 different shifts in a week. I've given up caring how they treat me, so long as they pay me....and my retirement at the end. I will work like they own me, if I can make a decent amount of cash for my last 5. I'm doing my best to retain a small morsel of sanity for the next however-long, and call it quits...after that, I plan to be very happy and never....EVER...think about this period in my life again. Oh, before I forget: Screw the PBA. Too little, too late. 12 hour shifts for the Captain's and Lt's would make a lot of sense. Like this scenario when you have one on Military leave one out with a torn rotator cuff and one acting that only is allowed to work day shift...... working with 2 permanent Lt one acting and then using the admin spot in the mix is the only way to make the schedule work. so a 12 hour rotation would make sense in this case........

Tallahassee Police Officers receive a 12% increase in salary and benefits over a 3 year period. Contract negotiated by PBA. How in the HECK does that happen? SCO is the largest group in PBA and we always get the shaft!!!!!
