Malachi, I 'd be interested in knowing what YOU'RE doing about your eventual early demise. The article was sound, your knowledge commendable, but where is your wisdom? If you really believe what you wrote (and I do) then what the hell are you going to do about it?
The original point is well taken. Who is going to "take care" of us? Until your local leaders, starting with Admin, view this work for what it really is, forget about fairness. Forget about what you think owed to you. This is the constant black eye for Corrections everywhere.

There is supposed to be a pilot program starting at Washington CI that will require all non-security personel through the CO training course. If it works there, it might be implimented state wide. So will that work? Or will this cause a nurse/maintenance/whatever to have to work on the compound as a CO when there is a call out?
baddawg - you said it best!

So I understand this, FDC is paying non-security staff to go thru the academy training? The staff must take the State test for the school to be effective? Heck, if the State can not give raises to present staff how are they going to pay the 3% high risk retirement? Please explain more on this subject of pilot program at C.I.

Everyone, nurses, doctors, everyone goes through corrections training and is considered a CO. Makes for a good response to a 10-24. But, their "academy" is 3 weeks. Just a wee bit shorter then ours. They also pay better. Depending on where you are in the country and your previous corrections work, a base CO gets around 37 and a half. Plus 10% between 6am and 6pm, and 25% on Sundays. 20 year retirement.

BOP, 80hrs at facility (Orientation) for all employees. 120hrs academy (residential) in GA. for law enforcement. I believe all persons working in facility get 20 year retirement under the law enforcement statute. So if you start at the oldest age 37 you go out at 57. You may be older in the m dical or chaplaincy programs.

MALACHI IS 100% CORRECT . "SPECIAL RISK" HAS NOTHING TO DO WITH HOW MUCH TRAINING YOU HAVE. IT'S ABOUT WHAT UNION REPRESENTS YOUR POSITION...... ASK ANY LPN!!!! IT IS ALL ABOUT GETTING OLDER .... THE STRESS INVOLVED WITH DEALING WITH CONVICTS AND HAVING TO DEAL WITH THE INCOMPETANCE OF SORRY ASS ADMINISTRATORS WHO THINTK THAT SECURITY IS THE ONLY DEPT.THAT HAS TO DEAL WITH STRESS. IF YOU READ THE LEGISLATIVE INTENT ON "SPECIAL RISK" .... PHYSICAL RISK IS NOT MENTIONED.... TRAINING IS NOT MENTIONED NOR IS YOUR POSITION MENTIONED. IS A DIETITIAN EXPOSED TO THE SAME "RISK" AS THOSE WHO ARE IN DIRECT CONTACT WITH INMATES. IS A MENTAL HEALTH CONSULTANT? GET OFF THE TRAINING WAGON AND SEE IT FOR WHAT IT REALLY IS.... SPECIAL RISK BENEFITS FOR THOSE WHO HAVE THE RIGHT REPRESENTATION!! BE SAFE

Yes, I agree dealing with inmates or offenders (for anyone) is extremely stressfull, but I also think that the adminstration of DOC/legislators/all that are involved in policy and proceedures add as much if not more stress to an already extremely stressfull situation. Just a personal opinion.

This is off the subject of high risk, but as for the training, IMO get rid of the "computer orientation" for new employees, no one really reads the stuff, they skim through just enough to get the right answers and do not have the first clue of one of the most important things to learn as a new employee, Inmate Maniuplation!! Go back to the 40 hours of new employee orientation and the actual 40 hours of Inservice a year for ALL Staff. Sorry about the soap box but I have a real problem with this. And let me add, it is not only the new security staff but the medical, other support staff, male and female alike that need this training. I have worked both Administrative and Security and seen good people from both walks of life and both genders get manipulated before they even realized what happened!

IT MIGHT NOT BE KNOWN BY ALL, BUT , THE DESIGNATION OF ONE'S JOB CLASSIFICATION CAN BE CHANGED BY THE FLORIDA DEPT. OF CORRECTIONS IF IT IS APPROVED BY THE GOVERNORS OFFICE AND IS INTRODUCED AS PART OF THE GOVERNORS REQUESTED BUDGET. IT WILL STILL HAVE TO GO THROUGH LEGISLATURE. THE DEPARTMENT NEEDS TO TAKE THE INITIATIVE TO PROVIDE EQUITABLE BENEFITS TO THOSE WHO HAVE STRESSFUL JOBS TOO........ JUST AS ANYONE WHO WORKS IN DIRECT SUPERVISION LIKE WE DO.. YA'LL SPREAD THE WORD AND.....BE SAFE.

Good points made here. The biggest obstacle for non high-risk DOC staff who do deal directly with inmates is the union assignment. It's unfortunate that DOC staff are not on AFSCME's radar, but it's true. That only leaves DOC and the Gov's office to request high-risk changes. It'll take some effort to make it happen.

WOULD WELCOME SUGGESTIONS FROM THE FIELD WHETHER IT BE ABOUT ..SECURITY ISSUES.. OR HIGH RISK. HE'S SUPPOSED TO BE OUR SECRETARY... LET HIM KNOW HOW YOU FEEL, IF YOU FEEL THAT STRONGLY ABOUT IT.THERE NEEDS TO BE CHANGES MADE IN THIS AGENCY AND HE MIGHT BE THE ONE WHO WILL GET IT DONE.
